Sustainable British bedmaker business, Hypnos, win second Queen's Award for Enterprise

Overview of our business, why it is relevant to the award?

Ethical British bedmaker, Hypnos, has been pioneering sustainable sleep for well over a decade and this was recently recognised with the Queen’s Award for Enterprise for Sustainable Development. This respected accolade is the second Queen’s Award for the company after they won one in 2017 for International Trade.

Hypnos’ latest achievement recognises its widespread commitment to sustainable production and a sustainable way of life across the business, and is a credit to its series of ground-breaking sustainable design and innovations. Indeed, Hypnos’ beds are some of the most sustainable in the industry being 100% foam free and 100% recyclable. They also use only natural and sustainable materials, such as traceable British wool from Red Tractor assured farms and FSC ® certified timber, meaning its beds need never go to landfill sites.

Why did we decide to apply for the Award?

The Buckinghamshire-based manufacturer takes its environmental impact seriously, with a true passion for creating comfort with integrity. Having been carbon neutral for 10 years, the company makes sure its products are made to not only last, but provide no negative impact at the end of its life.

Hypnos applied for the Queen’s Award for Enterprise for Sustainable Development as it continues to expand its green credentials following a number of ground-breaking environmental achievements in recent years, including achieving ISO14001 for its effective Environmental Management System.

What has winning the award meant to the business?

James Keen, Chief Executive Officer at Hypnos, said: “We are incredibly proud that our extensive sustainable efforts have been recognised with this Queen’s Award, our second within 3 years. It’s a great honour for each and every member of staff at Hypnos and really shows the value of investing in and in operating your business ethically.

“Looking forward, it’s certainly inspired us to do even more to develop our sustainable plans for the future and we’re already working on some interesting concepts for the years ahead, so watch this space!”

How winning the award will benefit your business

The royal-warrant holder hopes that this latest recognition of its ongoing sustainable efforts will act as inspiration for not only its loyal customers, but also other brands across manufacturing who are wanting to act more ethically and responsibly.

By receiving this year’s award, the sustainable sleep experts are able to provide true third-party endorsement from a credible source of its market-leading sustainable story, something that modern, discerning customers are increasingly playing close attention to when making purchasing decisions. This particularly rings true when you’re dealing with a product that is going to be a crucial part of a home or hospitality environment for many years.

As the Queen’s Award is one of the highest accolades available and only given to those companies who can prove that they meet the highest standards, this cements Hypnos’ position as sustainable leaders. Having this kind of high-ranking approval shows both partners and clients all over the world that they’re working with a bedmaker with proven credentials, giving them increased confidence in Hypnos as a supplier.

Do you have any advice for future Queen’s Award applicants?

James Keen adds: “At Hypnos, we are well-acquainted with the Queen’s Award for Enterprise application process, after winning our first award back in 2017. Whilst the application process can be long and requires buy-in from all areas of the business, being able to unite behind one goal and share successes from across the group is incredibly rewarding.

“If you’re thinking of applying for a Queen’s Award we’d recommend you get the process started as early as possible, ensuring you allow your business plenty of time to create the best application you can.

“Setting up a dedicated team of people to work on the Queen’s Award entry with you is also ideal. Not only will this help to spread the workload of the application in a collaborative effort, but it also means you’ve got an invested team to sense check things with, bounce ideas off and to work on set areas of the entry to ensure all information is covered off.”

Great to see other companies taking environmental impact of manufacturing seriously as we all need to do our bit to preserver the planet.

My own companyalso have high values on being as environmentally friendly as possible.
