Queen’s Awards for Enterprise: short list and non short list status
This week we sent emails to everyone who entered this year’s awards letting them know if they have made the short list or not. On 8 November the army took over our forecourt at 1 Victoria Street and brought with them the next contender for the fastest thing on planet earth; the supersonic Bloodhound ‘a mix of car and aircraft technology’. This has been sponsored by a variety of British businesses and the amazing vehicle is a wonder to look at; resembling a sleek rocket on wheels.
On 18 November our 2 BIS ‘entrepreneurs in residence’, Laurence Tomlinson and Rekha Mehr launched Global Enterpreneurship week in the foyer and lobby of BIS. Leeds-based entrepreneur Lawrence Tomlinson has run businesses in a number sectors including construction, software, chemicals, cars, and care homes. Rekha, founder and owner of Pistachio Rose, a business creating high-end Anglo-Indian cakes and sweets has been hired specifically to be a voice for start ups and small firms.
Business Secretary Vince Cable said:
Having them on hand to offer feedback and advice will be a significant asset and help keep our focus firmly on the needs of entrepreneurs.
During the week we were joined by the next generation of entrepreneurs and young tycoons. On each day of the week groups of young people set out their stalls in the upper ground lobby and sold a variety of goods to everyone passing. Amongst the passers by were our own Permanent Secretary Martin Donnelly and Minister of State for Skills and Enterprise Matthew Hancock.
So all you Great British companies out there … watch out, the next generation are coming, and they mean Business!
